The conditions on Philippine's voyage were severe. Passengers were often packed together in small rooms and forced to go without simple luxuries.
When Philippine got to St Louis, she probably had to pass a series of tests to come to America. They had to make sure that she was disease-free and a valuable future citizen of the United States.
It cost a great deal of money to take a trunk like this one on a ship. Philippine would have proabaly had one trunk full of her possesions or even shared it with another sister. ~**-------------------**~ Even though Philippine would have semi-personal sleeping quarters which she shared with about 3 other sisters, sleeping conditions were uncomfortable. Whenever Philippine got the chance she would have gone up to the deck of the boat for some fresh air. A few of the wealthier passengers would have had an 6 foot by 6 foot room to hold two people; but many of the lower class were not so lucky. Philippine would have probably brought along only a few belongings in her trunk. They were not allowed to bring much more. Back to the Voyage Page |
