Potawatomi Technology

Weapons

The Potawotomi hunted many different kinds of animals. This included rabbit, squirrel, buffalo, and much more. Some of the weapons that they used were bows and arrows, spears, war clubs, and long bows. The Europeans contributed the Potawotomi's change to firearms.

Transportation

For many years, the Potawatomi used canoes to transport people and materials. But in the 1680's, they abandoned these birch bark canoes for horses that they borrowed from the white settlers. These horses were useful for buffalo hunts, where they hunted on the Great Plains.

 Agriculture

Potawatomi Indians were Hunter/ Gatherers since the land on which they lived was too far north for reliable agriculture. They were forced to relocate to Wisconson during the Beaver Wars (1630-1700). It was easier to grow food there. Usually, the Women would gather food, and clean the fields while the men trained to be warriors and hunters. By 1660 the Potawotomi were agricultural, and their relocation was provoked by a desire for better soil.
