The majestic mountains towering over Grenoble speak of the spirit of the woman whose story we tell in this web site. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was a courageous woman who overcame many obstacles to live her dream, come to America, and lay the cornerstone for the Society of the Sacred Heart here in the United States.

As a teacher of the seventh grade girls here at Convent of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco, it was my privilege to work with them and present this web site so that others could share the legacy. They worked with diligence to present her story. In doing so, they came to see the power of one woman’s life and they looked to her as a model of one who followed her own dreams.

Many people helped with this endeavor. Thanks to my friends in France, the Religious of The Sacred Heart in Poitiers, the curators at Ste. Marie d'en Haut, and to friends who aided my journey there. We give a special word of gratitude for the support of our school community the Religious of the Sacred Heart at Oak Wood in Atherton, and to the members of the Potawatomi who contributed so much to this project.
