St. Rose Philippine Duchesne

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was the founder of the Schools of the Sacred Heart. The first of these eighteen schools was in America, in the city of St. Louis, in the year 1818.

At first it was difficult to teach in America because in order to survive and succeed there one needed to speak the English language. It was very difficult for Philippine to learn this language.

The society of the Sacred Heart was the only religious organization to educate the poor in the midwest at the time that she came there. After the Schools of the Sacred Heart was started, it set an example for other schools.

Soon there were hundreds of children at the school. All the children at the Schools of the Sacred Heart loved their convent home. All children were accepted into the schools as long as there was enough room for the student.

Philippine asked that nuns be sent to open schools for the Potowatami Indians.

Philippine Duchesne was a very imporant nun. What she did for the Schools of the Sacred Heart was amazing. If it wasn't for her our school would have never been started.
