The study of history and government gives humanity a better understanding of how the world has functioned and functions, and gives us insight into how to challenge our conceptions and shape the world for the future. We look at the beautiful, the tragic, the mighty, and the weak, and we analyze why those came into being and how they can be changed. Imbedded in the Social Studies, then, is the desire not just to understand but to create, and that is what I wish to cultivate in my students. As is stated in the Goals of the Schools of the Sacred Heart, study of history and government should "impel to action."
