Notes & Guidelines

Overall Project
The entire project (as indicated on the Project Grading Rubric) will be worth 15% of your cycle grade ; your theology notebook will be worth 40%; preparation, participation and exam percentages remain the same.   NOTE : Elements of the process--in particular the Notebook of Resources-- will be counted as homework assignments and thus be calculated as part of your theology notebook grade along with Q&Rs, TJs, S&Ts, etc.

Sources
You are expected to consult a total of six academic sources for this paper, at least three of which must be cited in the paper.   For the discipline of theology/ethics, please note that specialized encyclopedias of religion are acceptable as academic sources, but you must include the article title & author when listing them as sources.

As noted in the Project Objectives & Guidelines, you may negotiate with me about the use of popular sources (as one or more of your six required sources) or about substituting another sort of resource (such as an interview). You must, however, meet with me (not ask in passing at the beginning or end of class) and receive permission, in writing.   This documentation must be included in your Notebook of Resources to insure that you do not lose the points associated with following the source guidelines.

Paper
Remember: this is not a report!   This is a research paper that has a point-of-view and makes an argument.   Your thesis must be something that someone with reasonable knowledge and intelligence could disagree with.   To assist you in honing your argument, you must include a counter thesis along with your thesis & outline (due 1/28): what would someone, with similar knowledge on the subject who disagreed with your point-of-view, argue instead?

Notebook of Resources
Two class periods have been set aside for the review of your Notebook of Resources. The quality of your NR will be scored and the result counted as homework, so please follow the guidelines carefully.   If you need clarification of or help meeting the requirements, please do not hesitate to ask!   You should have completed all work on your NR prior to the completion of your rough draft.   If you have additional work to do on your NR before your final paper is submitted, it is your responsibility to find time to meet with me.

Draft / Final Paper
You are expected to include in-text citations in both your draft and final versions of the paper.   Remember to annotate your sources--both what you gained from consulting each source and why (or whether) it is credible--for the rough draft.   Only a hard copy of your paper meets the requirement of turning in both your draft and your final paper.

turnitin.com
You may submit your papers to turnitin.com see the report that is generated prior to the due date--and you can continue to do this, over-writing the previous report, as many times as you choose until the due date.   Paper are due at 5pm on the due date, although late submissions will be accepted.
