English IV

Englsih IV Policies and Grading Scale

Five Common Goals of a Sacred Heart education:

A personal and active faith in God;
A deep respect for intellectual values;
A social awareness which impels to action;
The building of community as a Christian value;
Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom.

The classroom policies for English are rooted in the goals of a Sacred Heart education.

Expectations:
The expectation is that a student will contribute to a positive learning environment in the following ways:

Arrive on time.
If for any reason a student is late to class, please enter the room quietly and take out or pick-up any necessary materials in order to catch up with the rest of the class. Please do not disrupt your neighbor. If the student does not have an admit slip, she must speak with the instructor after class.

Be polite.
Please turn off and put away all electronic devices before entering the classroom. The only exception to this rule is a student’s Palm. The Palm should be used as an organizational tool and not serve as a distraction to the learning environment.

Demonstrate a deep respect for academic inquiry and integrity.
Complete assignments by the due date for full-credit. The student may receive partial credit if the assignment is turned in the following day (whether or not the class meets). After the 2nd day, no credit will be given. If cirucumstances beyond a student's control prevents them from turning in their assignment by the due date, a parent or guardian must sign the assignment and the student must turn it in the following day for full credit (Revised 10/16/06)

If a student knows she will be absent due to a school related activity or medical appointment, it is her responsibility to see the instructor before the absence.

If a student has an excused absence due to illness it isthe student’s responsibility to find out what material was missed during the absence.

A student will have as many days to make up the work as she was absent i.e., if a student was absent for one day, the work will be due the day after the student returns to school. Please note: Drop days do not give a student an extra-day.

If a student has an excused absence on the day of a quiz or test the teacher will determine a test make-up date. If a student is absent the day before a test –whether excused or unexcused- they will still be responsible for taking the quiz or test on the day it is given.

If a student has missed class but is in attendance for the rest of the school day any assignment which is due must be turned in to the instructor for full-credit.

A student is responsible for all of her own work.  If a student is unsure of what constitutes plagiarism she should consult with the instructor.

Thoughtfully contribute to class.
This can be accomplished through regularly engaging in class discussion, staying on task, helping a fellow student, showing intellectual curiosity or simply keeping a positive attitude.

Regular attendance is imperative to success in the class; it is the student’s responsibility to know the school’s attendance policy for academic credit.

Respect the inherent value of others.
Please allow fellow students to share their point of view without interruption. Moreover, if a student has a different view than the one presented she is encouraged to analyze the position rather than merely react; however, students may always respectfully “agree to disagree”.  Please do not socialize while another person is talking.

Respect the beauty of your surroundings.
Please leave the classroom better than you found it. All food (unless given special permission by the instructor) is to remain outside of the classroom. The only exception to this rule is bottled water. Please do not chew gum in class

Written Assignments:
All major written assignments must be word-processed. Students should save all work on their computer or to a disk in order to facilitate revisions. Extensions will not be granted for “technical difficulties” (broken printer, computer crash, lost file, etc.); please manage your time wisely.

Extra-Credit:
Extra-credit is given in circumstances where intellectual curiosity is demonstrated. This may include attending a related historical event outside of class i.e., lectures, exhibits, and symposiums. Students are also encouraged to share with the class newspaper/internet articles related to class content. Please see the instructor for specific requirements.

Meeting with the Instructor:
The instructor will always meet requests for additional help. The best time to meet is D period or by appointment. E-mail sent to leos@sacredsf.org is checked daily and will be responded to within 24 hours.

Please remember I am dedicated to helping you achieve both personal and academic success during your years at Sacred Heart. Please feel free to talk with me regarding anything of concern. I look forward to a rewarding year!
