Assistant Teacher
Hired By & Responsible To Head of School, Dean of Lower Form, & Lead Teacher
Term of Employment

Three years with the option to reapply every year thereafter by submission of a proposal.

Primary Function

To assist the lead teacher  with classroom planning, instruction and supervision, while becoming an active member of the Sacred Heart community.

Responsibilities
  1. Be available to the students and lead teacher at all times during school hours as well as during professional workdays. Times when children are not present are used for lesson preparation.
  2. During the days before the school year begins and throughout the year, the assistant needs to be available to help with classroom set-up and maintenance.
  3. Attend and participate in grade level planning meetings.
  4. Assist in the preparation of teaching materials.
  5. Assist in the review and filing of completed student work.
  6. Assist in the creation/upkeep of a pleasant, organized educational environment.
  7. Assist with dismissal of students in your section.
  8. Substitute for the lead teacher when he/she is absent. The dean and lead teacher will assess when the assistant is ready for this responsibility.
  9. Familiarize oneself with the goals and criteria of Sacred Heart Schools. Involve oneself in the community of the school.
  10. .Attend school liturgies/assemblies/meetings.
  11. Supervise assigned recess/lunch duty each week. Arrive promptly for all surveillance assignments. If you are not going to be at school due to a personal day, field trip, etc.… it is your responsibility to find coverage for your duty.
  12. Share observations with lead teacher in preparation for parent conferences.
  13. Attend parent conferences, supporting the lead teacher.
  14. Attend parent functions that affect your grade.
  15. Observe two other classrooms each year.
  16. Attend two on-campus assistant workshops each year.
Guidelines
  1. Be available for the students and lead teacher at all times. Working on non school personal projects, and checking voice mail and email when children are present is not appropriate.  When children are not present, the time is to be used for school related duties.
  2. One teacher needs to be in the classroom at all times. Notify lead teacher if you need to leave the classroom.
  3. Follow the lead teacher's system in matters of classroom management, discipline, and teaching.
  4. Correspondence and conferencing with parents is the lead teacher's responsibility. No information regarding a student should be discussed with a parent unless the lead teacher has thoroughly discussed it with you. This includes informal conversations at dismissal, field trips, etc.… as well as during formal conferences. Refer parent questions and comments to the lead teacher. It is appropriate to say, "I encourage you to talk with Mrs./Mr. about that. . ." or "Mrs./Mr. has a better understanding  of . . . I am sure  that she/he would be happy to talk with you . . ."
  5. Any print on display or in correspondence needs to be neat, formed according to the style taught, and checked for spelling.
  6. Discuss any lessons you are teaching with the lead teacher beforehand, showing a written lesson plan when requested.  Facilitate instruction by teaching small or large group lessons as determined by the lead teacher.
  7. Arrive and depart in accordance with terms on your employment agreement and as deemed necessary by the lead teacher. If you need to deviate from contract hours, please seek approval from the lead teacher and dean.
  8. Clear with the lead teacher and the dean all activities that will require you to leave the classroom before 4:00 (coaching, after school classes, workshops, college classes, or extra jobs). Your assistance is needed for the entire school day, but the school is also supportive of your college work and outside interests.
  9. Give the lead teacher and dean as much notice as possible when you are going to be absent. If you are sick, call at least two people on the substitute list before calling the teacher registry, and then contact the lead teacher as well as the dean.
  10. If you have questions regarding the rationale behind decisions or teaching methods, ask the lead teacher privately rather than in front of students or colleagues.
  11. Meet all assignment deadlines given by the lead teacher.
  12. Papers you correct should be free of errors.
  13. The children must be supervised at all times. You must be attentive during recess and are responsible for filling out accident reports for incidents that occur under your watch.
  14. Dress in accordance with the school’s teacher dress code and recognize the importance of yourself as a role model.
  15. Read your email and school correspondence daily.
  16. You are not permitted to tutor, baby sit, house sit, etc.… for any family with a child in your section. In order to perform these duties for a family in another class, you must first clear it with the dean.
Lead Teacher
  1. Provide specific expectations for the assistant. Inform them of classroom procedures, schedules, and personal needs.
  2. Show them the curriculum outlines and include them in any planning meetings.
  3. At the beginning of the year, assistants should not supervise or walk the children alone until you feel confident they understand the procedures.
  4. Attend all assemblies with the assistant.
  5. Lead teacher, dean and the assistant decide when the assistant is ready to act as a substitute for the teacher.
  6. Provide feedback about the assistant's performance regularly.
  7. Discuss the narratives and reports with the assistant. However, assistants are NOT responsible for the content/writing of the narratives.
  8. In the beginning, be present when the assistant is teaching, making observations for constructive comments at a later time. Do not unexpectedly leave them in charge or ask them to teach without advance warning.
  9. Discuss problems with the assistant. If the situation does not improve, meet with the assistant and the dean.  Be supportive of assistants who have outside responsibilities such as college or coaching.
  10. Formally observe a lesson taught by the assistant twice each year. The dean will complete one of these observations. The lesson can be for a group or whole class.
  11. These observations are for the assistant to keep and will not be placed in their employment file.
  12. Provide a written assessment of the assistant (using forms provided) in conjunction with the dean twice each year
